MARTINEZ CORNER / LOCKWOOD AREA, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. A small but important geographic-name discrepancy appears when comparing Monterey County documents with federal topographic naming records. The Monterey County Department of Emergency Management lists “Martinez Corner” among its unincorporated communities. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Geographic Names Information System, however, records a populated place in the Lockwood area named “Martinus Corner”, feature ID 252934.

Where is the federally mapped name?

The GNIS-based location for Martinus Corner is 35.9399671° N, 121.1190844° W on the Williams Hill quadrangle, approximately two miles west of Lockwood, at a recorded elevation of about 958 feet. Historical USGS map indexes and the Williams Hill topographic place-name register use the spelling Martinus. Contemporary commercial maps of the Lockwood area also show Martinez Road, which is a road name and not by itself proof of a settlement’s official name.

Does this mean the county’s spelling is wrong?

Not necessarily. The county’s community list and the GNIS entry may be drawing on different historical conventions or even naming different features. The evidence available here does not establish that “Martinez Corner” is formally recorded as an official GNIS alternate name for feature 252934. That distinction matters: similar names in the same part of a county do not automatically refer to the same legal or geographic entity.

How could the difference be settled?

A definitive reconciliation would compare the relevant county map layer, older assessor and road survey maps, GNIS variant-name records and any historic naming decisions. The USGS GNIS help page explains that recognized alternate names can be stored under one record. The county’s GIS and Survey Records applications provide ways to check precise location and legal road maps.

Practical guidance for residents

When reporting an emergency, wildfire, rural road condition or farm-related event in the Lockwood area, use the road name, cross street, parcel location or exact coordinates, rather than assume that either settlement label alone will identify the scene. The presence of the word “Corner” does not necessarily mean there is a public junction with signs, services or safe parking.

Editorial note: The name discrepancy is documented; identification of the two labels as exactly the same geographic feature is not yet independently verified. This is an explanatory mapping report, not a naming decision or municipal boundary change.
