MARTINEZ CORNER / SOUTH MONTEREY COUNTY — October 31, 2026. A separate August wildfire in the hills beyond Lockwood prompted a temporary evacuation warning that was later lifted. The Bryson Fire began August 9 on Sapaque Road in the Bryson area. CAL FIRE’s finalized incident page lists 16 acres and 100% containment reached August 10.

What did officials announce?

The CAL FIRE incident report documents a response by ground crews and aircraft, with approximately 90% containment reported on the evening of August 9. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office separately issued an evacuation warning for zone MRY-G047 near Sapaque Road, before announcing it had been lifted at 10 p.m. on August 9.

The sheriff’s official warning-lift notice states that fire activity was no longer a threat to that warning zone at that time. CAL FIRE’s final incident status and the sheriff’s warning update refer to different decisions at different times; neither is a new evacuation order for October 31.

How does this relate to Martinez Corner?

The incident was near Bryson and Sapaque Road, not at the federal map point called Martinus Corner or a verified location inside the county-named Martinez Corner. It is useful as a south Monterey County wildfire preparedness example, but the article must not move the flames closer to the historic locality.

What can rural residents learn?

Register for Alert Monterey County, verify the correct emergency zone for each physical address, and keep evacuation plans for people, pets and livestock. Fire-zone names and incident perimeters, not a loosely defined community name, determine whether an order applies to a particular property.

Primary sources: CAL FIRE Bryson Fire, August 9–11, 2026; Monterey County Sheriff’s Office notice lifting the August 9 evacuation warning. No current warning or damage at Martinez Corner is asserted.
