MARTINEZ CORNER / LOCKWOOD REGION, Monterey County — October 31, 2026. A wildfire that threatened areas east of Lockwood this summer has a finalized incident record that residents can consult without mistaking it for a current emergency. The Williams Fire began on July 19, 2026 near San Ardo Road and Glau Canyon Road, east of Lockwood, and CAL FIRE now lists 144 acres burned with 100% containment achieved on July 24.

How did the incident develop?

The official CAL FIRE incident archive describes rapid growth on July 19, followed by firefighting aircraft and ground crews strengthening control lines. On July 21, crews reported an area of fire growth beyond a containment line before bringing it under control. After full containment, firefighters remained to extinguish hotspots and perform suppression repair. CAL FIRE’s final August 6 entry continued to list the cause under investigation.

Was the fire in Martinez Corner?

The official location does not say that. Monterey County’s community list names Martinez Corner, while federal geographic maps call a nearby Lockwood-area place Martinus Corner. That naming discrepancy remains unresolved. The Williams Fire’s recorded position east of Lockwood is a separate, explicitly identified site; it should not be labeled a fire at the historic corner or proof that any specific ranch house was damaged.

How to follow safety conditions now

For current local smoke or evacuation instructions, use Alert Monterey County and CAL FIRE’s current incidents page, not a July incident notice. An incident’s reported containment does not itself establish that all affected private land or access roads have been repaired.
